주요 줄거리 Main Plot (Including Ending)
In the 1920s, a young boy named Jiro Horikoshi dreams of designing beautiful aircraft, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical engineer Caproni. Because his nearsightedness prevents him from ever becoming a pilot, he dedicates his life to engineering. During the Great Kanto Earthquake, Jiro meets a young girl named Naoko Satomi on a train and helps her family, creating a brief but fateful connection.
Years later, after graduating from university, Jiro starts working for a major aircraft manufacturer. He struggles with the technical gap between Japan and the West, traveling to Germany to study advanced technology. While staying at a summer resort, he reunites with Naoko. The two fall deeply in love and get engaged, even though Naoko reveals she is suffering from tuberculosis, which was incurable at the time.
As Naoko's health declines, she moves in with Jiro to spend their remaining time together. Jiro remains torn between his devotion to his dying wife and his obsession with completing his masterpiece, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero. He realizes that his dream of creating a beautiful machine will ultimately be used as a tool for destruction and war.
In the end, Jiro successfully completes the flight test of his new aircraft. However, realizing her end is near, Naoko quietly leaves for a sanatorium to spare Jiro the pain of watching her die. After the war, Jiro walks through a dreamscape filled with the wreckage of his planes. He meets Caproni again, and Naoko appears in the wind, telling him, "You must live." Jiro resolves to keep living despite the loss and the tragic consequences of his creation.

This film is a deeply personal confession from director Hayao Miyazaki. It reflects his own fascination with aviation and his complex feelings toward his father, who was an engineer. The relationship between Jiro and Naoko represents a pure, selfless love that shines brightly against the dark backdrop of a tragic era. It is not just an animation, but a profound meditation on the dilemma between following one's artistic dream and the ethical responsibility for how that dream is used by the world. The Wind Rises is arguably the most quiet and melancholic masterpiece in the Ghibli collection. It replaces grand fantasy with the delicate portrayal of an individual’s solitary passion during the turbulent early 20th century. The most heart-wrenching aspect is how every moment between Jiro and Naoko feels like a fragile dream that could shatter at any second. The ending, where Jiro chooses to continue living despite his immense loss, offers a powerful sense of comfort. As the famous line from Paul Valéry goes, "The wind is rising! We must try to live!" This movie is a beautiful reminder to never give up on life, even in the face of sorrow.
